61 year old Bran Ferren spends millions creating one-off camper van- KiraVan, a vehicle includes an office, kitchen, bedrooms and even its own motorbike and drone for his 4 year old daughter. The father & daughter hope to travel across America and the world in this super truck.

The KiraVan, a giant custom built six-wheeled off road truck, is capable of drive down mud-swamped roads, and even rock covered roads. It will be able to travel up to 2,000 miles without resupply and navigate slopes as steep as 45 degrees thanks to a special suspension system.

The cockpit also has a special vibration reducing chair, as well as control for drones that can fly ahead to check traffic. At 31 feet long and more than 10 feet high, it is better equipped than most homes. It has an ecofriendly bathroom, a custom-designed kitchen where meals can be prepared, along with storage space for two weeks of traveling.

milan design week 2014 citizen light is time

Thanks to Enrico Zilli for sending us these photos of a light installation project at Milan Design Week 2014.

LIGHT is TIME is the mesmerizing exhibition at Milan Design Week 2014 developed by Tsuyoshi Tane of DGT Architects together with CITIZEN's in-house design team.

As a part of its global branding activities, Citizen came to take on the challenge of making watches that "change light into time" in accordance with the company's philosophy of "watches for all citizens." "Light is Time" is an installation of light and time. The installation is comprised of 80,000 watches' plates-the structural device that supports all of a watch's components. suspended in air at La Triennale di Milano will welcome visitors into an ethereal Art Installation that will blend the borders of time and space through light. There, a space orchestration where light will fill the space, conveying, through sound and light, a sense of light and time as yet unexperienced by humanity. Among other highlights, a pocket watch from the 1920s and the latest model will also be on exhibit. This rare timepiece will show visitors a glimpse of the origin of CITIZEN.

DGT was founded in Paris in 2006 under the joint management of Dan Dorell, Lina Ghotmeh and Tsuyoshi Tane. The winner of the international competition to design the Estonian National Museum, DGT is experimenting with architectural creation under the idea of a "Memory Field" from the firm's base in Paris. In addition to the ongoing building of the Estonian National Museum (slated for completion in 2016), DGT has projects underway in France, Italy, Japan, Lebanon and Switzerland. The firm has drawn international attention, as in 2008 when U.K.-based Icon Magazine selected DGT among the "20 essential young architects," and for "Kofun Stadium," a proposal for which DGT was selected a finalist in the 2012 international competition for the New National Stadium of Japan. DGT has won numerous other prizes including the young architects prize from the French Ministry of Culture (2008) and an award from the Architects Association of Milan (2008), as well as being the Red Dot Award Winner (2013).

Mischbar by Markmus Design Studio

Posted: 01 Apr 2014 08:07 AM PDT

Thanks to Marcos Aretio from Markmus Design Studio for sending us their project of Mischbar in Nuremberg.

A place that serves salads, soups & curries, ice creams, coffee, smoothies and juices, only deserves a name: "Mischbar" (Mixbar for the non-german speakers).

The claim from Mischbar "We bring you fresh local food" took the design studio formed by Marcos Aretio & Udo Kloos to their concept: an INDOOR MARKET, full of sunshades, hanging bulbs, trolleys and high tables, where fresh local ingredients are transformed into salads, smoothies or curries. The counter is built in 3 different materials and textures, depending the food that you get; striped white Corian (which looks like tiles) for ice-creams, oak wood for the soups & curries and concrete for the salads area. Cold, warm and fresh materials respectively. As a small detail, a tray dispenser was built inside the counter. The bench is a non-stop 7 meters long oak bench. The back of the bench was used to house a representation of the city of Nuremberg, a piece created by artist Martin Tibabuzo with rubber stamps made out of his own illustrations. Tibabuzo also illustrated the menu board, the columns and the tray-trolley.

Probably the biggest challenge was to create the Soups & Curries menu. Mischbar has a menu of 90 different soups and curries, but only 6 are daily served. The menu had to be easily interchangeable and visible. The solution was given by creating 30 wooden triangular bars, each "Toblerone" contains 3 dishes & prices which can be easily turned.

Finally, the coat hanger was designed making a wink to ice-cream lovers, using metal scoops to create the hooks.

Mischbar is located in the historic city center of Nuremberg, very close to the Hauptmarkt where the (probably) most famous Christmas Market happens every December.
